A Whirlwind Introduction to Dubai: Culture, Contrasts & Unforgettable Experiences - By Rachel Bown

Dubai has long been a destination that sparks curiosity, and after experiencing it firsthand, I can confidently say it more than lives up to the hype.

From futuristic architecture to deep-rooted traditions, this city is a fascinating blend of old and new — and my recent Emirates Dubai famil showcased it perfectly.

The journey itself set the tone for what would be an unforgettable week.

Departing New Zealand, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to Emirates Business Class on the Christchurch–Dubai.

It was my first taste of Emirates’ renowned service, and “above expectations” truly is the best way to describe it — exceptional comfort, impeccable service, and the perfect way to start an adventure.

We arrived into Dubai bright and early at 5.15am and headed straight to our hotel. My room was on the 69th floor, offering incredible views that instantly reminded me I was somewhere special. After a quick refresh, we made our way to Dubai Mall, home to the impressive Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo — an extraordinary attraction right in the heart of the city. Later, we ventured into the old Dubai souks, where narrow laneways, bustling stalls and vibrant colours provided a stark contrast to the modern skyline.

That evening, we wrapped up the day with a welcome drinks at the stylish Nikki Beach Resort before finally catching up on some much-needed sleep.

The following days was all about culture and experiences. The first stop was at the Museum of the Future — a striking building with interactive exhibits that offer a glimpse into what lies ahead. From there, we travelled back in time to Dubai’s old city for a heritage tour and a visit to Jumeirah Mosque.

Learning about Emirati culture, customs and traditions was a real highlight, especially when paired with a traditional lunch.

The standout experience of the trip came later that day: a desert safari like no other. Travelling by Land Rover across the dunes as the sun set was simply magical. The evening continued with camel riding, henna, a delicious dinner under the stars and traditional performances — easily the best night of the trip.

On our final day, we ticked off one of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks with a visit to the Burj Khalifa, taking in sweeping views across the city. After that, we explored the immersive House of Hype before enjoying some free time shopping in the souks.

Our farewell dinner at Atlantis The Royal, set on the Palm, was the perfect way to end an incredible journey.

Dubai is a city of contrasts, luxury and warmth — and one I can’t wait to share with clients looking for something truly special.
