Travel Insurance: Understanding the Fine Print Before You Fly

Travel insurance has become increasingly sophisticated over the years. Policies now provide a wide range of benefits and protections, but with that increased protection comes greater complexity. Travellers are often faced with policy wording, medical assessments, exclusions, and conditions that can be difficult to interpret.

Questions such as “What is considered a pre-existing medical condition?”, “What needs to be disclosed?”, and “Does a past medical issue still matter?” are more common than many people realise.

A pre-existing medical condition is generally any illness, injury, medical condition, symptom, or health concern that existed before a travel insurance policy was purchased, whether or not it is currently causing problems. This may include conditions that have been diagnosed by a doctor or specialist, required medication or treatment, are currently being monitored, or have occurred in the past even if the traveller believes they have fully recovered.

Common examples can include heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, respiratory conditions such as asthma, previous strokes or transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs), mental health conditions, joint or mobility issues, and any condition for which prescribed medication is regularly taken.

One of the most common misconceptions is that a condition does not need to be disclosed because it occurred many years ago, medication is no longer required, the traveller feels well, or previous trips have been undertaken without declaring it. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Insurance providers assess medical information differently, and failure to disclose a relevant condition can sometimes result in a claim being reduced or declined. For this reason, travellers should never assume a condition is irrelevant. If there is any uncertainty, it is always better to disclose the information or seek clarification from the insurer before purchasing cover.

The good news is that travel insurance continues to provide valuable protection for travellers, particularly when unexpected events occur. Whether it’s a medical emergency overseas, a cancelled trip, lost luggage, or travel disruption, having appropriate cover in place can make a significant difference.

The key is ensuring that the cover you purchase is suitable for your personal circumstances. Medical histories, destinations, cruise travel, and planned activities can all influence the type of cover that is most suitable. Understanding these factors before you travel can help avoid misunderstandings and provide greater confidence that you are properly protected.

This is where professional advice can be invaluable.

Travel Insurance: Understanding the Fine Print

At World Travellers Rolleston, Blenheim and Merivale, we work closely with leading travel insurance providers including Cover-More Travel Insurance, Allianz Partners and Kiwi Insurance (Southern Cross Travel Insurance). This allows us to provide a range of options so that clients can select cover that best suits their individual circumstances. Our experienced team takes the time to explain policy requirements in plain English, assist with the application process, and answer questions that many travellers may not think to ask, particularly when it comes to medical disclosures, policy conditions and understanding exactly what is and isn’t covered.

What sets us apart is our commitment to treating travel insurance as an important part of the travel planning process, not simply an add-on purchased at the end of a booking. Director Paul Robinson brings many years of insurance industry experience to the business and understands firsthand the importance of ensuring clients have appropriate cover in place before they travel.

“Travel insurance is one area where the risks of getting it wrong can be significant,” says Paul. “A misunderstanding over a medical disclosure or policy condition can have serious consequences if something goes wrong overseas. That’s why we encourage clients to ask questions and seek advice before they travel.”

Paul’s insurance background also allows him to provide valuable support when clients need it most. Should a claim arise, he acts as an advocate for clients, helping them navigate the claims process, understand their entitlements, gather supporting documentation, and communicate with insurers to ensure claims are managed as smoothly as possible.

While many travel agencies offer travel insurance, few have dedicated insurance expertise within their business. At World Travellers, we believe that helping clients understand their cover is just as important as arranging the cover itself. We see insurance as a specialist area that deserves careful attention, because the consequences of getting it wrong can be catastrophic.

While we can guide clients through the insurance process, only the traveller can provide their complete medical history, and the responsibility for ensuring all relevant medical information is disclosed remains with the applicant. Taking a few moments to carefully review your medical history before completing an insurance application can help avoid complications later should a claim arise.

Our support doesn’t stop once the policy is issued. Having an experienced team in your corner can provide reassurance during what is often a stressful time and allows travellers to focus on what matters most—recovering from an unexpected event and getting their travel plans back on track.

As a 100% New Zealand-owned business, we pride ourselves on delivering personalised service and long-term relationships with our clients. We understand that every traveller’s circumstances are different, and we believe that good advice is just as important as good cover.

Travel should be about enjoying new experiences and creating lasting memories. If you’re planning your next holiday, cruise, or overseas adventure, talk to the team at World Travellers Rolleston, Blenheim or Merivale*. We’re here to help. Whether it’s selecting the right destination, arranging your travel plans, understanding your insurance options, or supporting you through a claim, our team is committed to helping you travel with confidence. After all, the risks of getting travel insurance wrong are simply too high. That’s why we’re here—to help ensure you have the right cover in place before you leave home and the right support if you ever need it.

*World Travellers is a Co-operative with over 25 Individually owned business, Paul is the director of the Merivale, Rolleston and Blenheim Stores.
